The development of this website will help to ensure that the Department of Defence is in a position to meet the challenges and opportunities afforded by the Information Society. The Department of Defence is one of the Government Departments primarily concerned with ensuring the secure and stable environment necessary for economic growth and development. Put simply, its job is to ensure that the Defence Forces are in a position to carry out the roles assigned to them by Government. Maintaining a defence capacity related to security needs is an important expression of national sovereignty. The Minister of Defence is committed to implementing the Defence agenda set out in the Agreed Programme for Government.
