Procurement
Purchasing for the Department is carried out by Contracts Branch and by certain military branches. Contracts Branch is based at the Department of Defence, Station Road, Newbridge, Co. Kildare and the military branches are at the addresses listed below.
Contracts Branch
The role of the Branch is to support the overall objective of ensuring that the Defence Forces are properly equipped and to participate with the military authorities in the formulation of policy in that regard. The Branch also provides a procurement function in relation to defensive equipment and materials, and major procurement projects as well as certain Naval Service and Air Corps equipment and maintenance services. The procurement of certain services on behalf of other branches of the Department and the sale of obsolete Defence Forces’ equipment also come under the remit of Contracts Branch.

Military Branches
In recent years, the progressive delegation of financial responsibility to the Defence Forces permits the procurement of a wide range of non-capital goods and services directly by the Defence Forces. These include items associated with day-to-day operations such as food, clothing, transport, and the maintenance of equipment and premises. National Procurement Services (N.P.S.), centralised framework agreements are also used to acquire items that may be in common demand by a number of Departments.

Procurement by Contracts Branch, and by the military authorities, is conducted in accordance with guidelines laid down by the Government and with the Directives of the European Union.
Publication of Purchase Orders over €20,000
In line with the Programme for Government commitment, the Department of Defence and the Defence Forces has commenced the process of publishing details of Purchase Orders for goods and services valued at more than €20,000. This information will be published quarterly in arrears.
