O’ DEA ANNOUNCES FURTHER ACQUISITION OF MOWAG PIRANHA ARMOURED VEHICLES

The Minister for Defence, Mr. Willie O’ Dea, T.D., has announced that a further contract has been agreed with Mowag GmbH of Switzerland for the supply of fifteen additional Piranha Armoured Vehicles to the Defence Forces.
Under the contract. Mowag Gmbh will supply fifteen vehicles, nine of which will be fitted with a Kongsberg Remote Weapon Station with a 12.7mm machine gun and six will be fitted with an Otomelara turret armed with a 30mm cannon.
The contract value is in the region of €36.5m including VAT. Deliveries will all take place in 2007. Payments under the contract will extend from December 2005 to January 2008.
Minister O’ Dea said that “ the signing of the contract was yet another significant boost for the Defence Forces and a further indicator of my commitment to ensure that Defence Forces personnel are fully equipped with modern equipment which enhances their safety in carrying out their roles. The fifteen vehicles will be used mainly in the Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance roles on overseas missions. This procurement will bring the number of Mowag Armoured vehicles in the Defence Forces to eighty. The Mowag’s have proved to be a tremendous asset for the Defence Forces both at home and overseas.”
