Minister Willie O’Dea TD pays tribute to Séamus Brennan, TD, R.I.P –
A good friend and colleague

I am deeply saddened at the passing of my good friend and colleague Séamus Brennan.

Séamus was an outstanding politician and a truly honourable man. He deserves the many great tributes that are being paid to him today both inside Leinster House and throughout the country by his many friends and supporters.

His political skills and commitment to public life over 30 years helped change the direction of this country for the better. His command of economic issues particularly, was something I always admired.

In every Ministerial post he held he implemented positive change. In terms of my own Department of Defence, when Séamus was Government Chief Whip from 1997 to 2002 he was also Minister of State at the Department of Defence.

Séamus had responsibility for Civil Defence. He was roundly applauded by all political sides in Leinster House for bringing the first piece of Civil Defence legislation before the Dáil in over 50 years. The Bill provided for a dedicated Civil Defence Board which saw the Civil Defence develop on a national basis into a first class emergency response service working in support of all the mainstream emergency services. Séamus ensured the great unsung heroes of Irish life – the Civil Defence volunteers – were given their due recognition.

On a personal note I will always remember Séamus with great fondness and thankfully I had the pleasure of working with him closely for many years.

I offer my deepest sympathies to his wife Anne and their 6 children.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
