This Strategy Statement sets out the Vision and Mission of the Department of Defence and Defence Forces for the next three years:
Vision:
In the period 2008-2010 we will continue to workto develop and sustain our vision of a defence organisation that formulates and implements effective policy, provides timely and accurate advice and is capable of deploying a modern, interoperable, sustainable force that can deliver flexible military capabilities at home and abroad.
Mission:
To provide for the military defence of the State, contribute to national and international peace and security and fulfil all other roles assigned by Government. |

The White Paper sets out the policy on Defence for the next decade (2000-2007) with a view to ensuring an appropriate level of defence capability having regard to the changing defence and security environment both at home and abroad. The objectives of the White Paper are
to provide a medium term policy framework within which Defence policy can evolve to set out a clear strategy for the next ten years;
to provide for the continuation of the reform programme of Defence services, already commenced under the Defence Forces Review Implementation Plan, consistent with the national and international security environment and the state of the public finances;
to ensure that the management of Defence services is in accordance with the evolution of the Strategic Management Initiative for the public service; and,
to set out the basis for the future development of Civil Defence policy and the follow-up to the present "Towards 2000" strategy. |
