Speech by the Minister for Defence, Mr. Willie O’Dea, T.D.
at the opening of the new Technical Stores Building at the Naval Base

Secretary General of the Department of Defence, Flag Officer Commanding the Naval Service, Ladies and Gentlemen, I am delighted to be paying my first visit to the Naval Base, Haulbowline this afternoon to officially open this fine new Naval Service Technical Stores building.

Although I am little more than a month into my position as Minister for Defence, it has already become quite obvious to me that the modernisation of Defence Forces' equipment and infrastructure throughout the country has been a major priority for my Department over the past number of years. Indeed my opening of this new building comes a mere 8 weeks after my predecessor opened the new Logistics Unit headquarters and new accommodation units here in the Naval Base.

The Main Technical Stores building incorporates a warehouse, offices and ancillary areas including a staff eating area. The job was completed in nine months at a cost of €2.5 million.

The main contractor for this project was John Sisk & Sons from the Kinsale Road, Cork. Other sub contractors involved in the project were Dornan Engineering Ltd., John Horgan & Son Ltd., and C & W Windows - all based in Cork - and Messers P.J. Edwards Ltd. from Dublin. The design team for the building were Building Consultancy Group from Dublin. The Quantity Surveyors were Bruce Shaw Partnership from Cork; and the Mechanical / Electrical Engineers were BDP Dublin.
I'd like to congratulate all of these contractors and everyone else concerned on what is clearly an excellent job.

I would particularly like to acknowledge the personnel from the Directorate of Engineering and Building and Engineering Section for all of the hard work that they put into bringing this project to fruition.

It now gives me great pleasure to declare this Technical Stores officially open.
