Minister Coveney welcomes contribution of the Defence Organisation to

the “Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme”


This evening Minister for Defence Simon Coveney TD attended the official launch by the Taoiseach, Enda Kenny TD, and Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphries TD, of the “Ireland 2016: Centenary Programme” in Collins Barracks Dublin 7.

Speaking following the launch, the Minister said: “I am delighted to be here this evening to witness the launch of this extensive and exciting programme of Centenary events to mark the historic period of Easter 1916. I believe that the events when held will give Irish citizens and the diaspora a great sense of pride as we reflect on the momentous events of that turbulent time which ultimately shaped our nation of today”.

Speaking in relation to the contribution that his Department and the Defence Forces will play in the commemoration events, the Minister added: “As Minister for Defence I very much welcome the prominence and the scale of the role that is being entrusted to the Defence Forces supported by my Department. As always, I have every confidence that their contribution will enrich and enhance these forthcoming historic events by honouring and respecting the real significance of the sacrifices made by our Patriots.”

The Minister also acknowledged the role of his officials in the Department of Defence who have worked closely with their colleagues in the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and the Department of the Taoiseach in putting the overall programme together.
