Minister for Justice, Equality & Defence Mr. Alan Shatter, T.D., Attends the Annual IUNVA Wreath Laying Ceremony on Sunday, 6th November 2011

The Minister for Justice, Equality & Defence, Mr Alan Shatter, T.D., today attended the annual Irish United Nations Veterans Association’s (IUNVA) annual Wreath Laying Ceremony at its Memorial Garden in Arbour House, Mount Temple Road, Dublin 7.

The ceremony honoured the eighty six (86) Defence Forces personnel and one (1) Garda who have paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving on UN Peacekeeping Missions overseas.

The Minister said that Today we honour and commemorate the part played by members of the Defence Forces and An Garda Síochána who have served under the United Nations flag in the cause of international peace. Ireland has a long and well respected history of participating in overseas missions under United Nations mandates and today overseas service is an integral part of life in the Defence Forces.

The Defence Forces involvement in United Nations peacekeeping operations began in 1958 when a group of 50 officers took up duty as observers with UNOGIL in Lebanon. Since then, Ireland has participated continuously in United Nations peacekeeping operations, a service which has comprised more than 60,000 individual tours of duty and involved 55 missions. This is a unique record and one of which the Defence Forces and the Irish people are justifiably very proud.

In my role as Minister for Justice I would also like to recognise the significant contribution of Gardaí to international civilian missions. The participation of Gardaí in international civilian peace missions has developed significantly over the past few decades.”
