Minister for Defence, Simon Coveney, T.D.,
Welcomes rotation of Irish Troops on the
United Nations mission on the Golan Heights

07 October 2014

The Minister for Defence, Mr. Simon Coveney, T.D., has welcomed today’s rotation of Irish troops on the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) mission on the Golan Heights. The Minister wished each and every member of the 46
th Infantry Group, who departed to the UNDOF mission today, a safe and successful tour of duty.

The Minister particularly welcomed home the personnel of the 44th Irish Infantry Group, who had been serving for over six (6) months on the Golan Heights. The main body of troops is scheduled to fly into Baldonnel Aerodrome this evening following their extended tour of duty with the mission.

Members of the 44th Infantry Group will now enjoy a period of rest on post-mission leave to spend time with family and friends. Anticipating the arrival of the troops, the Minister said “I wish all the men and women of the 44th Infantry Group a relaxing period of leave following their extended tour of duty in a challenging operation. I know they have been looking forward to spending time with their families and I am sure there will be lots of happy celebrations in the coming days. I look forward to meeting up with the members of the contingent when they return to duty next month”.

The Minister went on to pay tribute to the members of the returning contingent saying “I would like to commend the efforts of the 44th Infantry Group. They discharged their role as UNDOF’s Quick Reaction Force in the professional manner we have come to expect of Irish peacekeepers. The Government and I place high importance on the valuable work being done by the Defence Forces in the challenging operating conditions they face in the region and in other missions throughout the world”.

Notes for editors

The Minister and the Chief of Staff will be meeting the troops in Baldonnel tonight but there will be no media invited as the focus is on the troops meeting family and the need to go home to rest.

The Minister will host an informal reception for members of the 44th Infantry Group in the coming weeks.
