Minister commends the Naval Service for their continued role in the Mediterranean

The Minister for Defence, Mr Simon Coveney T.D. today praised the Naval Service for their continued success in assisting with the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean. The Minister stated that "the Naval Service completed their 6th successful rescue mission this morning with the rescue of 310 migrants 40 km from the Libyan coast. The 310 migrants comprising 212 men, 59 females and 39 minors were retrieved from a barge earlier today. This brings to 1064 the number of people saved by our Naval Service in the last week."

The Minister went on to say that " the Naval Service have resumed operations in the Mediterranean and will continue to assist the Italian authorities in tackling this very difficult humanitarian crisis. I would like to thank the crew of the LE Eithne for their outstanding work in the Mediterranean to date and to wish them continued success in their endeavours".

In conclusion the Minister commented that "while the current activities by a number of countries, including Ireland, in the Mediterranean is welcome, there remains a pressing need to progress a comprehensive approach to addressing this ongoing crisis ".
