The Minister of State at the Department of Defence, Paul Kehoe TD, today met with Major General Purna Chandra Thapa (Nepal) Head Of Mission and Force Commander, UNDOF and Deputy Force Commander, Brigadier General Tony Hanlon at UNDOF HQ, Camp Ziouani on the first day of his official visit to the Middle East.

Minister Kehoe and the Force Commander discussed Ireland’s contribution to the UNDOF mission. The Minister was briefed on the current situation and how in turn the ongoing unrest in Syria is currently impacting on the mission.

Minister Kehoe later addressed the Irish personnel of the 48th Infantry Group under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Mark Prendergast.

He thanked the Irish soldiers on behalf of the Taoiseach, Minister for Defence, and the people of Ireland stating:
Your commitment, service and loyalty to the traditions of the Defence Forces on overseas service contribute extensively to the high regard in which Ireland and indeed Irish peacekeepers are held throughout the world”.
