Here you will find information about the work of the Department itself and links to other sites connected to Ireland's defence and security. The development of this website will help to ensure that the Department of Defence is in a position to meet the challenges and opportunities afforded by the Information Society. The Department of Defence is one of the Government Departments primarily concerned with ensuring the secure and stable environment necessary for economic growth and development. Put simply, its job is to ensure that the Defence Forces are in a position to carry out the roles assigned to them by Government. Maintaining a defence capacity related to security needs is an important expression of national sovereignty. As Minister of Defence I am fully committed to implementing the Defence agenda set out in the 2002 Agreed Programme for Government.
The information contained in this site is designed to assist you in gaining an understanding of the complex and very important work carried out in the Department. The intention is to maintain a dynamic website which will be regularly updated. If you need any further assistance, please contact the Department's information section. I hope that you will find this site a useful source of information and will continue to visit it regularly.
